Ava W - Developer Journal
Week 13
This week, instead of workshops and lectures, we had a weeklong project in Bank Plain. The project consisted of us making interactive data visuals using different sets of environmental data. My group were working with NASA global temperature data and created a piece using concentric circles and dots.
At the start of the week we were able to head to the immersive lab and see all the technology that was being used there. We got to see the 360° screen and view others work on the screens. I found it super inspiring to see this as it helped me visualise my work being up on display. We were also able to see a 360° camera capture area that I have shown in the pictures below. It was so interesting to see the space and visualise how our work would look.
I enjoyed working on this project and was very proud of our final outcome. We decided to use the Live Share extension on our code, so we could work at the same time. I really enjoyed working on sections of code as a group – this meant we were able to bounce ideas between us and work very efficiently. I was able to implement many of my own ideas whilst simultaneously helping others implement their own.
However, I did also feel that there were some negatives whilst working on the project. There were times where I felt undermined by someone in our group and told certain parts were too difficult for me to figure out. I think it’s important to reflect on these negatives as it shows how I pushed past these harsh and untrue comments to improve our work anyway. I feel that I was still able to provide work for my group that benefited us greatly and excelled our piece.
Whilst working on the project there were some things that I had little to no knowledge of prior to this week. This allowed me to research into a lot our project to give me an in-depth view into how projects like ours can work. I carried out a lot of the initial research into what our project could look like and similar ideas. This gave us a good base to work from as we had others code and visions. I really enjoyed looking at different ways data can be visualised and the best ways. It was important to me that our piece stuck to the principles I had researched.
I feel that this project has opened my eyes to other projects I can carry out in the future should I choose to. I really enjoyed using the MIDI controllers and seeing how live interaction can affect the piece so drastically. I really enjoyed learning how to use a MIDI controller and feel that this information will be very helpful later on in my course.
