Week 12

This last week has been spent working on the maze-solving brief with the Pololu 3pi robots. I made a lot of progress with the functions to turn left and complete a U-turn. My robot is still unable to complete a maze, but is able to identify junctions within it. I am hoping to work more on this over the Christmas break, as well as the essay.

I also attended one of the professional inauguration lectures this week. Kirk Woolford gave a very insightful and engaging lecture on his 40-year body of work. It was incredibly fascinating to hear about the work he’s done in academia, film, and videogame industry. I also came to the realisation during his talk that I had seen some of his work earlier in the year. In January, when touring the immersive visualisation and simulation lab, we were shown examples of work made for the screens and were shown some of his pieces. I really enjoyed looking at his work and his relationship with creative technologies.

On Thursday, there were also two lectures that I attended. The first was a recap of algorithm complexity, something I studied at A-level in detail. The second was given by a guest lecturer named Sara Cardinale and was on storytelling through sound. She introduced us to several musical theories and frameworks and how she works with them. It was interesting to hear her journey of working solely in music to then transition into technologies uses with it. Cardinale showed us her system that she’s working on and her interpretation of artificial intelligence within a creative space.
