Week 11

Lecture

The lecture this week was given by printmaker and programmer, Licia He. I had already come across He’s work at A-level when trying to combine computing into my art. Similarly to me Licia spoke to us about how she struggled to combine computing and art. Her way to combine the two is with plotters. Licia worked iteratively with many materials and supplies to come to the current version of settings. I found it really interesting to hear the process of how she works and how plotters can be used. I particularly liked how she called her work a collaboration between her and her plotters.

After the lecture I decided to research several areas that had been touched upon. I began by looking at generative art systems that are available to others. I found it interesting looking at all the different versions that can be created by the same piece of code. I then chose to research different plotter models to see if I would be able to do something similar in the future. I really like the art created by the plotters and I hope I can create something using a similar system in the future.

It was really interesting to have a lecture from someone I had already researched previously. It felt like I had a much more in-depth explanation into her work and a clearer vision as to how I could follow this path for myself.

Workshop

In workshops this week we began looking at algorithmic art. As I mentioned in the lectures section, I had done some research into art involving computing for my a-levels. I really enjoyed the introduction to p5.js as I had wanted to use this program for a while but didn’t know how to work it. I feel that this workshop has opened a lot of doors for me to create more art – both personal and for university.
